Surviving NYC Steam Locomotives

The following enumeration of surviving New York Central Steam locomotives was printed in the pages of the Central New York Chapter, NRHS Green Block by Richard Palmer. The list is a bit longer than we had previously imagined, but sorry, still no Hudsons!

NYC Alco RS-3 8255 at Midland Railway, Kansas

The Midland Railway operates excursion trains on a line originally constructed in 1867. Train rides feature an over-20-mile round trip from Baldwin City via "Norwood, Kansas" to Ottawa Junction, Kansas, traveling through scenic Eastern Kansas farmland and woods via vintage railway equipment. The Midland Railway is a completely volunteer-staffed, non-profit, common carrier railroad operated to preserve and display transportation history as an educational demonstration railroad. Of interest to New York Central fans is Alco RS-3 8255, which operates regularly on the line. Privately owed by Century Rail, this 1951 graduate of Schenectady never looked so good! Coincidentally, John Dziobko photographed the 8255 in service on the Harlem Division in 1966.
