In the latest issue of NYC Modeler, Jim Six explains how he came to pattern his railroad after the New York Central's Big Four operations in Michigan, after building Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard Air Line models for many years. Photo by Jim Six

Volume 3 for 2012 of the NYCentral Modeler is now available on the NYCSHS website.  This issue contains more articles than any previous issue. This 75-page edition is again the biggest one yet and features many photos and the biographies of all of the authors.  You will even see photos of some of our member’s layouts, important information about the Society, and details on the 2013 NYCSHS Convention to be held in Poughkeepsie, New York, next spring.

We are pleased to feature articles by several authors bringing you topics including: “Modeling the NYC in Albany," by Alan Bell, “2012 NYCSHS Convention Layouts” by Noel Widdifield, an interview with NYCSHS Webmaster Otto Vondrak, “Modeling the NYC Michigan Division” by Jim Six, “NYC West Side Freight Lines – Part 1” by Ron Parisi, and “Kitbashing Steam Locomotives – Part 2” by Tom Bailey.

The issue has coverage of the many New York Central models coming out currently and in the near future.  Jim Benedict, Associate Editor, who also writes a similar feature in the NYCSHS Central Headlight, gives us the latest.

NYCSHS President, R. L. Stoving, writes about “Come on Up” in his regular feature telling us about an event over sixty years ago that shaped his interest in trains.  He also offers a free copy of the NYCSHS Central Headlight to those of you who think you might be interested in joining our Society, but just don’t know for sure.

Our readers continue to comment very favorably on each issue.  We believe that this issue continues the quality standard set by past issues.  We hope to motivate more of you to contact us about featuring your layout or collection in one of our future issues.   Don’t be afraid to help us show off your NYC modeling.  We will help you with photographing your models and writing the article.  We provide a style guide, sample article and some photo tips to all who are interested.  We really do want to help you show off your NYC models and layouts!
This edition promises to be a truly exciting fifth issue for those of you who model the New York Central, or any railroad for that matter.  This e-zine is for members of the NYCSHS and non-members who model in all scales.  Check it out today and let us know what you think. Visit the website and download all five issues of the NYCentral Modeler for free.

We hope you have a wonderful summer season and we enjoyed meeting many of your at the NYCSHS annual convention this past May. We hope to see even more of you at Poughkeepsie next year.

Leaving on a Jet Train: How Don Wetzel Brought Train Travel into the Jet Age

In the summer of 1966, railroad engineer Don Wetzel bought a pair of GE jet engines from a surplus Air Force bomber, bolted them to the roof of a stock commuter car, and took the train to a straight section of Ohio track. On his second try, he zipped down the rails at 183 miles per hour, a new North American rail speed record.

The record still stands. Wetzel’s jet train, along with France’s TGV 001, also remains the world’s fastest self-propelled train. (Unlike electric trains, the jet train carried its own fuel). “Actually, our speed hit 196 miles per hour and we were decelerating when we went through the timing traps,” Wetzel says. “Everybody thought it was pretty funny that we set a world record when we were slowing down.”

Complete roster of New York Central Railroad Marine Dept. barges

Main source of this data is a clerk's file box "MCL Card File" (Marine Craft Listing), now in the collection of the South Street Seaport Archives, which contains a single 4x6 card for each named craft.  These cards gave the basic data for each barge, and on them a clerk would recorded relevant data during their lifetime, such as major maintenance events. Most of the cards are for unpowered barges, but a few ferries and other craft were also given a card. The numbered craft were apparently given a different file; that file did not end up in the Archives. Some of the written notes on these cards were in handwriting that is hard to decipher; where there is doubt about the exact spelling, the word is followed by "?" here.

The material of construction was wood unless “steel” appears in this line; fwooden construction was the default method until very late in the department's history, except for a few craft that needed additional strength. The railroad did switch to steel construction as a standard in the 1950s, and then numbered its craft instead of naming them, and these craft apparently were given a different set of file cards that did not end up in the file that ended up in the Seaport archives. Thus information about numbered vessels in this roster comes from a variety of other sources.

OVERVIEW OF THIS ROSTER
Each entry in the roster contains the following: The first line contains the name of the craft, then its basic characteristics: type of craft; hull no., date built and builder; dimensions and capacity. The builder name is shortened to save space; the full name, plus the location of builder (where known) is given in a list at the end. Hull number: this is a number issued by the government for each hull constructed, inscribed somewhere in its bowels, that remained the same even if the craft was rebuilt and renamed by a new owner. This allowed data to be kept coherent, especially for the purpose of listing in the Merchants Vessels of the U.S. (MVUS) directory, formerly issued annually (past issues are available for reference in various marine archives). In some cases, instead of a hull number, the MCL provides a “Custom House Number”, starting with “CH”; this was another official number provided to some craft, to make sure that import or export freight passing through did not bypass customs payments.

Lines below the first one are for additional information. Most of these craft were acquired new, but if it was acquired secondhand (later than its build date), the acquisition date and source are given on the next line. Further lines give major changes to craft over time (e.g. conversion to other type).  The last line tells how craft was de-accessioned: some were sunken or destroyed in accident; most were sold at the end of their useful life. The price sold for is given here, as it gives some indication of condition at time of sale. The initial cost of most of these bargse was in the tens of thousands of dollars, depending on complexity of the craft, year built, and other factors.
